Half-Life 2: The Orange Box Review Part. 3

•April 19, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Now we get to Team fortress 2, the creme de la creme of online mayhem. As you can tell by my metaphor, I love this game. But, let’s start with the basics of TF2.

Team Fortress 2 is a multiplayer class based shooter. You join a team, select a class and go wreak some bloody havoc. Basically most of the maps are control point based where teams fight for control of areas on a map. If you complete an objective, score kills or heal a teammate you gain a chance to get a critical hit which does tremendous damage to an enemy which could decide who wins a fight.

Here is a list of all the classes and my individual review of them.

Scout

The Scout is the speedy class of TF2, they can run incredibly fast and double jump to make course corrections in mid-air but they have the least health of all the classes making them vulnerable to gunfire, and most of all the Pyro’s flames. This class can also capture points twice as fast as the other classes making them great for a first assault unit. The Scout comes equipped with a bat, a pistol, and a shotgun.

Soldier

The Soldier is the easiest class to understand, you run around and pull the trigger to kill people. Overall the soldier is in the middle with every characteristic, they can jump to an average height, they run at an average speed, and they have average health, but this class is formidable and pose a serious threat to anything that gets in the way of its rockets. Soldiers come equipped with a shovel, a shotgun and their trusty rocket launcher.

Pyro

The pyro is the most fun class to play because you simply run around and burn people, sometimes wiping out an entire team. Pyros are also an important part of defense due to their ability to instantly detect any spy in the area on fire with just a touch from their flamethrower. These guys come loaded with a flamethrower, shotgun and fire ax.

Demoman

One of the most devilishly maniacal classes, the Demoman is able to lay sticky bombs that he can detonate regardless of his location on the map, these mines are crucial to stopping invaders and even containing them in their spawn point. This guy comes with a stickybomb launcher, a bottle of alcohol and a grenade launcher.
Heavy

The Heavy is one of those classes that you do not mess with up close, he is a large russian man who carries a massive Gatling gun he has named Sasha. If you combine him with a medic you have a formidable duo. This guy is good at holding down chokepoints but he moves slow and thus is not meant for charging the frontlines. He also has the most health out of every class. The Heavy carries his Gatling gun, a shotgun, and his bare fists with which he deals out justice.

Engineer

Ah, the engineer, a crucial member of any team. This guy can build teleporters, turrets and dispensers that dish out ammo and health to anyone nearby. While playing this class you will be constantly moving. Not only do you have to maintain and upgrade your equipment but you also have to keep vigilant for the ever intrusive spy who might just destroy your structures. Normally this guy is key for transportation and holding crucial points. A team without him is almost certainly doomed. As an engineer (engy for short) you come equipped with a wrench, shotgun, pistol, and a tool box.
Medic

A medic is pivotal to any team, they heal teammates and if given enough time they can even make a teammate invulnerable for 10 seconds. One of the cool features of this class is that after you heal some you gain the ability to hit a ton of critical hits on your enemies making you pretty tough in combat. If you happen to be this class, stick to a heavy on your team and stay behind him. As a medic you come equipped with a healing gun, a bone saw and a syringe gun.

Spy

The very so sneaky spy is one of those classes that makes you paranoid and that causes you so much frustration that you eventually start attacking everyone on your team just to be sure they are not disguised. As a spy your job is to disguise yourself as an enemy and slip behind enemy lines. in doing so you will be able to stab your enemies in the back or destroy all of their crucial equipment with your electro-sapper. Your loadout with this class is your trusty cigarette case with which you disguise yourself, your revolver, a butterfly knife and an electro sapper. You are also able to make yourself invisible for a short period of time to let you get behind the enemy and look convincing.
Sniper

The ever classic sniper is a fun class to play just to get head shots and watch an enemy’s head explode. there is not much to this class, you just aim for the head and pull the trigger. You get a sniper rifle, an SMG and a machete.

And now for the overall ratings.

Gameplay:

The matches of TF2 are frantic and trying to defend your final control point is intense and fun. Spy checking keeps the quiet before the big rush entertaining and if you are dominating, just messing around is good too.

Graphics:

The graphics pf TF2 are cartoonish which makes the massacres all the more fun. The flinging body parts are also fun to look at and each class has it’s own unique flavor.

Overall TF2 is one heck of a game, and I would have bought the orange box just for it.

Half-Life 2: The Orange Box Review Pt. 2

While I have a few moments today I decided to write up a review for the Orange Box’s most popular game, Portal. For those who have been living under a rock Portal is a game centered around physics and obviously portals. When you make a 2 portals, they are connected to each other seamlessly and thus you can travel through them to reach impossible locations. As you progress a voice named GLADOS guides you and informs you of your task as a test subject. You even meet one of the most iconic characters of the game, The Weighted Companion Cube.

Gameplay:

Gameplay-wise Portal is focused on puzzles that keep you very busy and in the end give you a massive headache (especially the special advanced ones) The most outstanding feature is the humor in the voice acting of GLADOS. All in all the gameplay is superb.

Graphics:

What can I say, the graphics in portal are exactly the same as Half-Life 2 which is not a bad thing, but like HL 2 a graphics improvement would be nice.

Half-Life 2: The Orange Box Review Pt. 1

Well, what can I say, half-life has been a major player in the gaming world for some time now and I jumped at my first opportunity to buy this great bundle of games and since making my blog, I decided to write a review of all of these, now I can give you a general review but I might as well go in depth into each game individually.

Half-Life 2:

Story:

Obviously, most people know that half-life was a landmark game in terms of awesomeness. Half-Life 2 only ups the ante to a new level of amazing. Starting the game you are greeted with G-Man royally creeping you out. At first, you assume that all is well until you get your first glimpse at the outside world. As you progress through the game you learn more and more about the mysterious invaders, the dreaded Combine, who have enslaved the race and eliminated any possibility of reproduction via a “suppression field”. Along with that, alot of people have ended up missing or dead inexplicably, so it is pretty obvious what you have to do, go on a crowbar wielding rampage.

Almost as soon as you get off the train you meet up with an old friend from Black Mesa, Barney the security guard, and pretty quickly you join the resistance against the evil Combine. You get your trusty HEV suit and meet up with your super sexy girlfriend within a few minutes of the game starting and the rest is history.

As far as weapons go, all of them are unique and useful, sadly, the most useful weapon, the AR2 pulse rifle, only has 3 clips of ammo max which makes ammo scarce alot of the time. Other than that, ammo is plentiful in later levels, but early on you are stuck with 2 or 3 weapons, the crow bar, pistol and smg.

All in all, HL2′s gameplay is superb with only a few minor issues that I wish were resolved

Graphics:

The graphics in Half-Life 2 are nothing but jaw dropping. The enemy models are very generic and repetitive, but it makes them easy to distinguish from the rest of the characters. Blood effects are also on the weak side. The terrain and other back ground objects are fairly good looking ,but more recent games out shine all of these,

All in all the graphics are not at all too impressive but they pass for a next-gen game. In the next installment I hope to see some impressive looks from the entire cast, but for now they are decent.

Stay tuned for my next installment some time this week.

My Random Call of Duty Tip

•April 13, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Considering my recent surge back into the competitive world of Call of Duty 4, I decided to post some of my top tips for beating your opponents and ranking up quickly. Today I am only posting one tip since I cannot think with a full stomach.

Ranking:

Challenges

Challenges are essential to a player to rank up quickly (I got to level 20 within about 3 hours of play time). I start off by killing 150 enemies with my favorite weapon netting me 1350 points plus the 1500 you get for kills (if doing team deathmatch) within the first few matches which is immensely useful to ranking up quickly. When doing these I tend to start off with my best weapon ,the mp5, and then I work my way through the rest of the guns until I finally run out of guns except for sniper rifles (I am not a good sniper until I get my Barrett), this happens at around level 45 but then you get the Barrett when you rank up anyways.

Stay tuned for my next installment and even tips on different games later on.
